Virus Information

While there are a fair number for viruses, worm and Trojans floating around, they seem to have lost their impact to spyware and hijackers.  In fact, most spyware and hijackers install a Trojan on your system.  What riles me is that the "major" anti-virus programs don't bother recognizing them.  They either don't view them as a threat, so they don't deal with the problem, or they have another agenda like selling their own security software.

It was real hard for us to update this page due to viruses becoming just another part of the security issue.  So I'm gutting it for now and plan on just updating it when new threats arise.

Our favorite site for identifying viruses and removal instructions is Symantec.  There are other sites that also provide information on viruses, worms and Trojans, but so far Symantec provides the most comprehensive information, even on parasites their flagship product doesn't detect.

Virus Protection.  We've been using a program called Protector Plus for a couple of years now with wonderful results.  It is very tunable, so it is possible to get the protection you want without giving up too many system resources.  Not very expensive, and good protection.  Well worth looking into.

For those of us who don't want to shell out the money for virus protection, AVG if free for individual use.  It is also excellent for the "technically challenged."  The setup is very easy, and there aren't many options, so anyone can get it setup and have excellent protection without having to figure out a lot of "techno geek speak."

If you are interested in what others are experiencing, then you may want to check out the newsgroup alt.comp.virus.  There is always lively discussions going on, information on viruses and anti-virus software, not to mention a wide variety of opinions.  A good newsgroup to check out, and even get some pertinent information.
